OLDHAMMER SMITHY - AFTERNOON
----------------------------------------------
Maybelline hobbles in through the front, her right arm loosely gripping a crutch as she struggles to get the door to the customer entrance open and manuever herself inside, panting a bit in exhaustion as she glances around for help. "Hello? Excuse me!"
Cavro is hunched over the anvil next to his forge, humming a muffled, tuneless song in time to his hammer strikes when he hears a voice from behind, pausing with the hammer raised over his shoulder as he turns toward the small door next to the huge ones. "Moh, hemmo! Ah-" Cavro pulls his leather facemask off, setting his hammer down and taking a few steps toward the door that May is silhouetted against. "Hello, how how how may I help you?"
Maybelline smiles up at the figure, shifting her weight to her left, uninjured side. "Oh um, hi! Hello, yes, I'm May. Um, Maybelline, and I sorta have a... business contract to make? Or, really, just a long list of stuff I need made. But not at all once."
Cavro sheds his gloves and sets them on his workbench as he passes it, just barely managing to avoid scratching his chin as he thinks. "I I I've heard that name... Oh, are you our new engineer? I heard what happened, terrible. I would be happy to help out."
Maybelline glances away a moment, but nods and smiles, "It uh... well, what happened, happened. Not much I can do now but move forward. But yeah, I'm the new engineer, and so I need to make things right." She shifts her crutch back and hobbles up to the desk, pulling out a single page on which are written a list of about a dozen part names. "How familiar are you with engineering parts? Tubes, casings, frameworks? If I can't get this stuff ordered out of Sarn quickly, I thought maybe someone could smith them locally?"
Cavro nods as she hobbles by him, and gasps when she's no longer just silhouetted, a hand clapping over his mouth as he finally sees her injuries. He gathers himself quickly, the physical gesture causing enough pain on his sore snout to keep him present. "Oh, oh, um..." He follows her to the table, moving to stand at her good side as he peers over the list. "I've made all sorts of castings, and make new molds to to to your specifications."
Maybelline tilts her head at Cavro's reaction, then glances at her arm and frowns, "Oh uh, sorry. First time seeing an ICEE burn? It's not as bad as it looks now. That's just residual burn, all the magic's been leeched out by the Doc already. My arm and leg are just really weak for now." She shakes her head, ears perking up, "But that's great news! That list is parts I need to get a temporary generator up and running! If I can get those by the time I'm able to work, it'll be no problem to get it running! Then I can get you a list of what I need for building an actual full-strength generator again!"
Cavro nods, reaching up to scratch his chin but quickly switching to his ear instead. "Hm, so I'll need to know which of of of these parts need to be magic resistant, and which we can can can get away with using common impure ores." He looks toward a set of small double doors at the back of the room, leading to his storage.
Maybelline laughs a little excitedly, "Yes! I can write up a more detailed list if you want, but the most important part is the main containment core. It has to be magic resistant, and sealed properly. Or uh... well... Magic escaping gets rather wild and uh... boom. Otherwise, the coupling, sweep, and any conduits need to be resistant. The rest of the framework pieces and casings can be lesser metals."
Cavro nods, looking back to the list. "More details would be good, a a a simple drawing would be better. An exploded schematic would be ideal." He blushes slightly, turning to May. "Oh, pardon me! I I I didn't mean..."
Maybelline waves her left hand in a gesture of pacification, completely unable to drop the smile from her face, "Oh no no no, don't worry about it! I wasn't even sure how much you'd be able to do or I'd have stayed up all night to draw that up for you! I can have an exploded diagram of my plans for the temporary generator to you by the end of the week! Probably earlier!"
Cavro chuckles nervous relief, smiling at May. "It's mostly just me working here, so it will take a bit of time to make the castings, but but but I should still be faster than a shipment from Sarn. If I I I had an extra pair of hands just to smelt the ores, that would help..." He rubs his chin absently, glancing at the idly burning forge. "Erika would never let me hear the the the end of it if I asked Smitty to help..."
Maybelline hums, "Can't say I know how to do that, but I can try to help?" She leans to her side, giving half a shrug with her good arm, "When my arm and leg are healed. And assuming it's not a strength-related job. I'm not all that strong. And uh... yeah. I might not be the best choice. You'll have to run up a receipt for the parts there so I can get them budgeted too... I think it'll probably cost me more then my stipend, but Doc's helping me with that too."
Cavro comes back to the present, considering May for only a brief moment before shaking his hand at her concerns. "I'll put a receipt together, but don't worry about paying for for for anything, we can work it out in the future. Getting some some some steady power back on for the people is more important, and I'm happy to to to be able to help with it."
Maybelline 's ears flatten back as she looks at the badger with a smile. "I... thank you. Just make sure it's not putting you in a bad spot."
Cavro shakes his head, smiling. "Money hasn't been a concern for a while, keeping up with all the the the work is the tough part. But an emergency request like this, I'm sure a a a few people won't mind getting their gates or hinges a little later."
Maybelline nods. "Emergency request for the auxiliary at least. The real deal is gonna be a much bigger project. ...though, that'll be dependent on finding a real wizard too. Doubt Respite has one of those just sitting around."
Cavro ponders for a moment, "Well... Not as far as I know, used to to to hear things about a couple people, but those rumors died years ago." He perks up after staring at the forge for a few seconds. "Oh, thinking about saving some costs, do do do you think that any parts of the old generator can be sal sal salvaged for melting?"
Maybelline shifts back to take the weight off her bad leg. "For melting? Could be... I doubt anything could be reused, but I haven't gotten a chance to look at the remains yet. Especially with whatever it is Strix did there that's causing all the lightning." She frowns with a sudden realization, "I don't even know if my tools are still there... those were a goodbye gift from my parents..."
Cavro sighs with a sad smile at the mention of lost tools, putting a hand on May's good shoulder. "There's always hope, I'm sure they're waiting for for for you to come home."
Maybelline nods slowly, a hopeful smile crossing her face. "Thanks..." She pauses, tilting her head, "You know, I uh... I suck with names, especially the first time I meet someone, but I don't think I caught yours?"
Cavro blinks, letting off of her shoulder to scratch his ear again. "Oh! How rude of me, sorry. My name is Cavro."
Maybelline grins, "And I'm Maybelline, but uh I just go by May. I think I said that. I just... I'm not so great with the friends thing either. I mean, this is a business transaction, but I don't know, you've been awfully kind, and so many people in this town want to be friends, and I guess I'm kind of assuming things, but uh... right. May. Just May."
Cavro snorts a chuckle, "I don't know much about that myself, I I I tend to be a bit too busy to keep close friendships, with a couple exceptions." He blushes slightly, thinking about Erika for a moment. He looks about, noticing the forge getting low and his project having gone cold. "Hm, speaking of, and I don't mean to rush you out, but if that's all we needed to discuss for now..."
Maybelline laughs a little awkwardly in response, then nods. "Oh! Right! Didn't mean to keep you! I'll drop off the full diagrams and exploded parts lists as soon as I'm able. Thank you, Cavro." She shifts the crutch enough that she can give a little bit of a bow to the blacksmith.
Cavro mirrors her bow, smiling. "Any time, I'm I'm I'm glad I can be of service." He quickly putters over to the bellows, pulling down on a large suspended weight to trip it back into running with an appreciative response from the furnace.
Maybelline moves the crutch back into a somewhat comfortable position and shakily grabs the handle, turning to make her way out of the shop, thoughts already turning towards preparing those plans...
